A group of like-minded individuals started meeting and having discussions regarding a service provision for senior citizens living in North and Middle Caicos realising that many of these people were socially isolated due to the long distances between various communities on the two islands and the difficulty, sparsity and availability of transport. Many of them have family members that live on the neighbouring islands or in other countries due to employment opportunities and convenience of living, children’s education and many other factors, fracturing their family units. This has had knock-on effects in terms of their care provision and social interaction and their activities of daily living. Whilst there are modest service provisions available these tend to occur in isolation with poor co-ordination making it difficult for home bound persons to interact adequately and provide for their medical and nutritional needs and conveniences that those of us with transportation easily take for granted. Compounding this situation many have significant co-morbid disease profiles and are dependent on foreign caregivers/housekeepers who have differing social structures and values, speak different languages and are poorly remunerated for the tasks that are required leaving these persons more vulnerable and socially isolated. It was decided that a charity in honour and respect for these peoples dignity would be the most appropriate approach to try and assist them in their daily living and make it a joy to have lived and show them that their community cares and respects the sacrifices they have made for the community at large.
